Ombre Birthday Cakes

Pretty Purple Ombre Birthday Cake

Webster defines ombre as having colors or tones that shade into each other.   I have noticed an increase in ombre designs in hair colors/styles and clothing and now cakes!  Ombre cakes seem to be the big thing in cake decorating these days.   This cake design is fairly simple to create yet the results are amazing.

Some ombre cakes feature the color tones in the frosting, others on the inside cake and some feature a complete ombre design on the inside and outside of the cake such as the cake pictured here. This cake design is created when you apply the shades of color from light to dark.    The dark color is usually at the bottom of the cake and the lightest color is at the very top, however, this can vary. You can apply your ombre frosting in many pretty designs such as petals, roses and ruffles.  You can view the video tutorials on this page for step by step instructions.

To decorate a rose ombre cake such as the beautiful purple cake pictured above, you can use a Wilton 1M Star decorating tip or any similar tip.   Make your frosting and separate it into bowls.   Tint the frosting different shades from light to dark.  Place your frosting into decorating bags with the star tip.  Using your star tip create large swirls, or roses, around the cake.   When finished with one layer, use the next shade of frosting to create the next layer of color.

Pink Ombre Frosting Designs

Pink Ombre Frosting Designs

The elegant pink cake pictured here features a frosting ombre design.   Simply separate your frosting into bowls and tint each using icing color or paste.  Then frost your cake in sections or layers carefully blending the colors together.   This style of cake can be finished off with completely smooth surface or you can add ridges like you see in the cake pictured.

Acrylic ombre cake toppers are another great idea for your celebration.   The cake toppers are 100% FDA approved and measure 3″ x 6″.   You can even personalize the topper with a name or custom message. The colors you can purchase include red, blue, purple, yellow, pink, mint green and gray.

Other ombre cake designs include:

  • Petal Design:  Pipe blobs of frosting around the cake and using a spoon spear the blobs down either down or across.  Then create your next row.
  • Rose Design: Create pretty swirls using the Wilton 1M Star Decorating Tip.
  • Ruffle Design:  Create very thin strips of fondant using a pasta machine and add the ruffles with a taper tool.  Then apply the ruffled fondant to the cake in layers.
  • Buttercream Frosting: This method involves frosting the cake in layers and blending the colors together.

Ombre Cake Batter

Making an ombre layered cake is very simple.     Here are the basic steps:

  • Make your cake batter using your own recipe or a boxed cake mix.  White cake works best since it is easier to tint.
  • Divide the batter into how many layers you want for your cake.   Ombre layer cakes are generally 3 to 5 layers depending on how tall you want your cake to be.
  • Using icing color or paste tint the batter various shades of the color you are using for your cake.
  • Pour the cake batter into your pans.
  • Bake your cakes.
  • When the cakes are baked and cooled, place them on top of each other spreading frosting between each layer.
  • Then frost and decorate the your cake.
  • You can choose to frost your cake with an ombre style or all one color.

Create the image of zombies crawling out of the ground with these unique cake and cupcake supplies.   The first item is the bloody monster hand. These creepy hands will look just like zombies rising from the dead once inserted into your cupcakes.  Simply top the cupcakes with crushed cookies to look like dirt and the end result will look like the cupcakes featured above.  You can even add a tombstone cookie for a more ghoulish look.  Each set comes with 12 plastic picks measuring 2 3/4″.  You can place your cupcakes in zombie themed baking cups.  These baking liners will make a wonderful addition to your cupcake display.  Each order contains baking liners.

Zombie sugar decorations would look wonderful on your party cupcakes. The decorations include a brain, zombie and hand.

Edible cake toppers are another great idea for your celebration and there are many topper designs available.   Simply bake and frost your cake and/or cupcakes and apply the edible image.

Acrylic zombie cake toppers come in different styles including square, oval and star shaped.  Toppers are made of 100% food safe acrylic and feature vibrant artwork.

Some of the toppers include sayings such as:

  • Zombie Outbreak
  • Team Zombie
  • Zombie Rush
  • Happy Birthday
  • Beware Zombies

Paper cupcake toppers are very easy to make.  You can use zombie stickers to create your decorations.  Simply matte each image to cardstock and punch out using a 1 1/2″ or 2″ circle or scalloped punch.   Then attach a toothpick and insert into your frosted cupcakes.  Please visit my Cupcake Topper page for photos, instructions and supplies.

Bite-sized brain candies would look amazing on your gory party cupcakes.  I would suggest using pink candy melts to create your chocolate brains and then drizzle some raspberry sauce or dessert sauce on top.   There is nothing like eating a bloody brain off of your cupcake.   These candy molds are very simple to use.

Monster Jam Cupcakes

montsterjamcupcakesMy son had a Monster Jam themed party for his 7th birthday.

For his party cupcakes, I made paper cupcake toppers as well as a unique Monster Jam Stadium cupcake stand to display the cupcakes during his birthday party. The cupcakes and stand were a big hit at the party and now that the party is over, my son uses the cupcake display to play with his monster trucks. He pretends it is a Monster Jam stadium.

This page will feature step-by-step instructions as well as all of the supplies needed to create the Monster Jam cupcakes and cupcake display for your party.

Please visit my Monster Truck Birthday Cake and my Monster Jam Party Games & Activities page for more party ideas and supplies.

Decorating your child’s bedroom? My Monster Jam room decor page has a large selection of bedding sets, comforters, wall clocks, wall decals, personalized room signs, fan pulls and more.

I make paper cupcake toppers for many of my kid’s birthday parties. They are so simple to make and they look so nice on the finished cupcakes. They are also a great decoration when the cupcake supplies for a particular party theme are limited. This was the case for Monster Jam.

Below are the steps to create these Monster Jam cupcake toppers. Keep in mind these basic instructions can be used to create paper cupcake toppers for any party theme.

Supplies needed: Computer and Internet for images, photo paper, cardstock, patterned paper, toothpicks, assorted paper punches, glue and tape.

  • Find images of Monster Trucks on the Internet that you want to use for your toppers
  • Copy them into a word document and play around with the size until you get a size small enough for your cupcake toppers
  • Print the images out onto 8 1/2″ x 11″ photo paper
  • Punch out the images using a circle paper punch (I used a 1 3/8″ paper punch)
  • Punch out cardstock using a slightly larger paper punch (I used a 1 1/2″ paper punch) in colors to match your images and party theme ~ I used orange, green and blue
  • Glue the Monster Jam images to the colored cardstock
  • Punch checkered flag patterned paper using a 2″ scalloped paper punch ~ two punches per topper
  • Glue the two checkered flag punches together ~ this is so you have a double-sided topper which I thinks looks nicer
  • Place a toothpick on the checkered flag punch leaving enough stick to insert into your cupcakes and attach with a small piece of tape
  • Glue the Monster Jam image onto the checkered flag punch over the toothpick

I assembled the cupcake toppers a few days in advance and on the day of the party inserted them into the decorated cupcakes. Please visit my Cupcake Topper page for more information on making these unique cupcake decorations.

Cupcake wraps are the latest trend in cupcake decorating. Unlike traditional cupcake liners, cupcake wraps keep their bright color and shape since they are attached after the cupcakes are baked.

I purchased the checkered flag cupcake wraps from Etsy seller Olivia’s Paper Shoppe. They were perfect! I simply baked the cupcakes in plain cupcake liners. After the cupcakes cooled, I decorated them with chocolate frosting to give the look of mud or dirt from the Monster Jam arena.

Then, I wrapped the checkered flag wraps around my finished cupcakes and inserted my paper cupcake toppers.

The Monster Jam cake display was created to look like an actual stadium.

Supplies Needed:  Computer and Internet for Images, (3) 9″ x 13″ Cake Boards, Patterned Paper, Cardstock, Checkered Flag Duct Tape and Monster Jam Decal Stickers.

Back Board of Stadium: The back board was created using one 9″ x 13″ cake board. I covered the board with black cardstock. I printed out the text “Happy 7th Birthday Kyle” and the Monster Jam logo onto photo paper. I then glued on the text, logo and my son’s birthday invitation to the board and accented it with checkered flag paper.

Floor of the Stadium: The floor of the stadium was created using one 9″ x 13″ cake board. I covered the board with dirt patterned paper.

Sides of the Stadium: The sides of the stadium were cut out of one 9″ x 13″ cake board. I covered the board with black cardstock and then attached the Monster Jam sponsor decals.

I covered the outside of the back and sides of the stadium with checkered flag duct tape. Once all of the pieces were finished, I hot glued the stadium together.

Tools and Toolbox Party Cupcakes & Chocolates

tools3I made these tool theme cupcakes for my husband’s birthday.  He is the Mr. Fix It in the household, so these cupcakes were perfect.   However, you can also serve these tool cupcakes at a kid’s Handy Manny, Bob the Builder or Construction Theme celebration.

The cupcakes and frosting were from Duncan Hines and the cupcakes were baked in silver foil baking liners.  The frosting was tinted moss green using Wilton Icing Paste and piped onto the cupcakes using a decorating tip.

The chocolate tools and toolbox were made using a Toolbox Candy Mold from Cybrtrayd.   This candy mold features a hammer, screwdriver, pliers, wrenches and vice grips.   There was also a large toolbox.

For the chocolate, I used Wilton Light Cocoa Candy Melts.  If you have never melted chocolate before, please visit my Easy Chocolate Making page for step-by-step instructions and photos.

After the cupcakes were frosted and chocolates were finished, I topped each cupcake with a tool.   In the center of the cupcake tray, I placed the tool box on four Recess Peanut Butter Cups and filled it with colorful M & M candies.

My husband loved his tool cupcakes and I am sure your little Mr. Fix It will love it for their birthday, too!
